New monitor launched to visualise climate damage by municipality in Belgium

Updated: 19 hours ago

The Belgian Climate Centre has announced the launch of the Klimaatschademonitor | Moniteur des dommages climatiques, developed by Assuralia. This interactive tool provides data on climate-related damages caused by extreme weather events, such as storms and floods, across Belgium.

The tool compiles information on insured claims and estimated losses over the past decade, with data categorised by municipality, province, and region. It includes damages to homes, vehicles, and businesses. The platform is designed to help users visualise trends and support informed decision-making regarding climate risk management and adaptation strategies.

Hein Lannoy, CEO of Assuralia, underlined the tool’s significance:

“It is important for everyone—citizens and local governments alike—to understand the impact of climate damage in their area. This can help them make informed choices in their prevention policies and encourage residents to consider measures to make their homes more resilient.”

The Belgian Climate Centre actively supports initiatives like this and aims to foster collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and the public. As a central point for reliable climate data and services, the Centre works to strengthen research on climate trends, impacts, and risks. Tools such as the Klimaatschademonitor | Moniteur des dommages climatiques reflect the Centre’s mission to provide accessible and reliable data that encourage effective adaptation measures.

Rozemien De Troch, Climate Services Lead at the Belgian Climate Centre, highlighted the importance of cooperation in tackling climate challenges:

“Collaboration is essential to address the causes of climate change and adapt to its consequences. By promoting tools like this monitor, we encourage the use and dissemination of reliable data that supports scientific research, policy decisions, and public awareness needed to tackle today’s climate challenges.”

The Belgian Centre for Climate Risk Analysis (CERAC) also uses data from this tool for national climate risk assessments. These analyses provide valuable insights to policymakers and local governments, particularly for planning and managing risks.
